Washing windows, while a seemingly menial task, is actually a bit of an artform. If you’ve ever tried to consistently wash windows, then you know what avoiding streaks and smears and getting a window to actually look like a shiny piece of glass is easier said than done. However, if you follow some simple steps, you can clean your windows a lot more effectively. Here are some tips for cleaning your windows…
Use a Large Cleaning Tool
First of all, it’s easier to clean windows when your cleaning tool has a wide surface area. This tool can either be a large damp sponge, or even a strip applicator, which is a wide washcloth wrapped device with a handle. An important thing to remember here, though, is that you don’t want to use any cleaning device that is too abrasive if you are cleaning windows with a UV film, as it may damage the coating.
Always Squeegee
The number one key to cleaning a window without getting an abundance of streaks is to use a squeegee. Don’t just dry your windows with some paper towels. Always squeegee the remaining moisture off of the window after you clean it. To properly use a squeegee, you want to to make a zig-zag motion from the top corner and go down the whole length of the window. After the end of each motion, take a paper towel and clean off the squeegee.
Don’t Leave Drips
After using the squeegee, there are still probably some drips that are remaining on the edges and corners of the window. If this is the case, simply take a mostly dried (but slightly, slightly damp) rag and soak up any remaining drips.
Don’t Use Abrasive Cleaners on Film Windows
This cannot be said enough, but if your windows are coated with a UV film protection, then it is important to adjust your cleaning methods so that the coating can last a long time. This means avoiding using any abrasive types of cleaners on your windows. There’s a popular method of cleaning windows with baking powder, but that is going to scratch the film and ruin the UV protection.
